It’s Great British BBQ weather!
Summer is fast approaching and we are ready to enjoy days with our friends and family around a BBQ, we can’t promise sunshine but we can promise some good laughs and good food!
Here are our top 10 items that we feel are a must at any BBQ, whether you are preparing these yourselves or popping to a local butcher or nearby supermarket – we have got you covered.
A staple item for any BBQ – use meat, use vegetables, buy them or make them yourself, they are a must! We asked the GuardianCard team for their favourite toppings on a burger and cheese came out on top.
From hot and spicy to sweet and saucy, how would you have your chicken wings? Nick, our co-founder recommended marinating them in a tablespoon of these four ingredients: garlic salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper and oregano. Ultra easy and super tasty.
This salad is fresh, simple and delicious… make your salad however you like, but I would recommend roasting some Mediterranean vegetables and then tossing them with orzo along with feta and basil. Don’t worry if you can’t eat it all, it will keep in the fridge for a few days.
Guacamole is not only delicious but it is also good for you! Pick yourself some up at the supermarket or make some yourself. Add tomato, onion, lime juice, and salt and pepper to make it ultra-tasty.
Call them kebabs or kabobs, you will need them on the grill! They are so great because they are versatile for even the pickiest of eaters. Try some halloumi kebabs, they go great with sweet red onions and bell peppers… why not marinate these in harissa paste for that extra kick?
BBQ, picnic, light lunch… potato salad has to be on that list. It is a family favourite and easy to make, why not get all of the family involved. If you want to try something different why not add vegetables like celery, canned sweetcorn or chopped pepper.
Coleslaw is the ideal summer BBQ condiment, with its delicious mix of crunch and creaminess. Good housekeeping recently voted Morrisons The Best Extra Crunchy Coleslaw as the best supermarket coleslaw. So even if you don’t want to make your own you can still make sure it is on the table.
If you haven’t tried jackfruit before, it is ultra-tasty and suitable for vegans. When cooked in barbecue sauce, it tastes just like pulled pork, just not quite as chewy. Have it in a burger, in a wrap or just on its own… it may be the first time you have tried it, but it won’t be the last.
Slice them and grill them, or pop them on the BBQ whole, they will make a healthy and delicious side dish. Esther, our Head of Marketing, loves hers with sundried tomatoes and feta.
Last but not least… is the best course.
What can be better on a summer’s evening than strawberries and cream! Add some meringue, sprinkle with crumbled biscuit, pop some vanilla extract in your cream, or even leave it as it is… it will still be delicious.
